Dentures or Dental Implants / Veneer? Depends on Your Budget - I still wear these unruly creatures in my mouth called Dentures, and I don't even fit the elderly stereotype of someone that would normally wear dentures. I was actually only about 21 years of age when  I first went to Dr. Simmons in Southeastern Missouri to begin the denture process on my mouth. He removed all of my teeth, which wasn't that painful except for the upper front teeth. They give you gas and a shot for each tooth. My main issue was "gag reflexes". Before this endeavor, I had already had acid reflux and sensitive gag reflexes; enough that I would gag profusely until I threw up. NOW, I have dentures on TOP of that!!! Well, God works in mysterious and miraculous ways, because after all of the hassle of trying to fit me with dentures (and all of the puking), the dentist (being in the field for about 25 years) said, "We should have never pulled your teeth. I don't think you are going to be able to wear dentures." --- Well, I have them in my mouth right now, and I'm getting by just fine. As a matter of fact, I rarely take them out even while sleeping.

It took a lot of time before I could benefit from to them. Here is a trick that can help you get used to your dentures. Start off my just putting them in and wearing them for a short period of time each day, and slowly you will get used to them. I LITERALLY had to wear mine for a couple minutes at a time and then take them out until I slowly worked up the courage to being able to wear them all of the time.

Some people can get by without having to use adhesive, however I use it daily. My teeth (even when first molded) did not stick in my mouth like they should have, plus they had to chop off a little extra in the back of my uppers to relieve the gag reflexes a bit. They also create sores when they come loose and start bouncing up and down while eating, and white bread is hard to deal with when wearing old-fashioned dentures. You can ask anyone that has had them and they'll tell you the same thing. The bread loves to get stuck to the upper pallet which covers the roof your mouth.

Dentures Vs. Dental Implants: Weighing the Many Factors

Whether one opts for dentures or dental implants depends on many factors I.e. appearance, finances, personal comfort, etc. Dental implants were developed by Per-Ingvar Branemark, a Swedish orthopedic surgeon some fifty years ago. The first dental implant was yet to be performed when I was  fitted for my first dentures in 1960. The first actual dental implant operation was performed in Europe in the mid 1960s. My dentures were state of the art at the time and one had a difficult time distinguishing the differences between my full upper dentures and my lower teeth, which were my real teeth. If I had to do it all over again I probably would still opt for dentures because it is a quick process and having implants done can take up to eight months from start to finish. Having a dental implant done is a three-step process that usually involves four dental appointments spread out over an eight-month period. In addition, a team approach involves the patient's general dentist and an oral surgeon or periodontist.

Step 1: The first step involves drilling a hole in the gum and then screwing a titanium post into the bone under the gums. The original implants were tapped into the gums using a hammer. After the titanium implant is screwed into the bone, the patient has to wait four to six months before returning for the next phase of the treatment. During this healing period, the bone grows around the implant firmly anchoring it in place.

Step 2: during the second step, the oral surgeon makes an incision in the gum and inserts a steel ball atop the implant to train the gum to grow around it in the shape of a normal gum. This phase usually entails a one to two week healing period. In some cases, some oral surgeons will combine steps one and two with a four to six month healing period following.

I have worked in the dental field for over 20 years and have learned much from each of my employers. The Doctors all have their own ideas of what is or is not relevant in their practice. Some doctors offer only the newest, most high tech options for any type of dental work. Other doctors  start with the least expensive or least invasive options before proceeding to the more expensive alternatives. Any dental treatment comes with risks--whether it be to your mouth or your wallet!!

The most important thing to remember is that YOU have the final say. If there is a procedure you aren't comfortable with or do not understand, ASK! A good dentist will take the time to answer questions, give you options and put your fears to rest.

When we hear dentures, we think of those nasty looking "false" teeth in the little cup on grandpa's night table. Eww, little fizzy tablets that turn the water blue. Well, not much has changed! The material is generally an acrylic, pink in color. But these days, there are a variety of "teeth" to choose from. Varying colors, many shapes and sizes for your doctor to use. This can make the denture look almost like your own teeth. Making a denture can be a long process--impressions, try-ins, bite registrations. Expect several visits with a couple of weeks in between each as your "models" are usually sent to a lab unless you are dealing with a dentures only practice. But be patient. This is done to make sure you get the best fit possible. Some dentures are made after all of your teeth have been extracted and your gums have healed. Other dentures called immediate dentures, are made before your extractions and then placed in your mouth immediately following the extractions. Dentures should be removed every night and cleaned. Your tissues need to "breathe" so plot those babies in the cup with the cleaner for the night.

Dental laboratory technicians are skilled craftspeople who make and repair dental appliances, such as dentures, inlays, bridges, crowns, and braces, according to dentists' written prescriptions. They work with plastics, ceramics, and metals, using models of a patient's mouth or teeth made  from impressions taken by the dentist.

Dental laboratory trainees earn slightly more than minimum wage. As technicians gain experience, however, their salaries increase. The U.S. Department of Labor reported that in 2000 the median yearly income for dental laboratory technicians was about $26,915. The department also reported that the lowest paid 10 percent of this group earned roughly $16,182 per year, while the highest paid 10 percent earned about $44,657 annually. Median hourly earnings of dental laboratory technicians in 2000 were $12.88 in offices and clinics of dentists and $12.87 in medical and dental laboratories.

According to the National Association of Dental Laboratories, an especially productive or skilled technician may earn as much as $60,000. Self-employed technicians and those who work in smaller laboratories and perform a variety of work exceed the average earnings.
